01What It Is
A card, not a bracket
The difference decides everything else about how the day runs.
In a tournament you enter a division and find out who you meet. At UGI you are matched: a named opponent, agreed in advance, built into a card one bout at a time.
That is why registration asks for a record, a rank and a weight rather than just a division: matchmaking is working with those values to find you the right opponent. It also means an athlete can put their name forward before a card is announced. The pool is what the card is built from.
Everything around the bout comes from Catch & Submit: the graphics, the photography, the gear. One brand, one standard, from the poster to the mat.

There are no points and no advantages. A match is won by submission inside two six-minute rounds, and if neither athlete finds one, a single six-minute overtime settles it on the first takedown.
Every submission is legal, which is the part worth knowing before you enter: heel hooks, neck cranks and the rest are all on the table. Slams are legal as well. What is not is slamming or spiking an opponent on their head.

Questions
What people ask before registering. If something is not answered here. It is because UGI has not set it yet rather than because we are being coy.
- What is UGI?
- UGI Caged Grappling is a submission-only grappling series owned and produced by Catch & Submit. Matches are made one at a time against a named opponent, and every bout is built as its own event on the card.
- Who can compete?
- Adults and youth athletes, men and women. You need an athlete profile, a current weight, your academy and rank, and a photograph. Everything else is confirmed per event.
- How are matches made?
- Matchmaking works from the pool of athletes who have registered for the card. Pairings are made on competitive fit: weight, experience, rank and record, with age taken into account where it matters. You are told who you are facing before the event.
- Are there fixed divisions?
- No. There are no brackets and no pre-set divisions to sign up for. Each bout is matched individually, which is why the entry asks what you weigh and where you train rather than which division you want.
- How is weight handled?
- You enter your current weight and matchmaking works to a tolerance of about 10 lb between opponents. Larger gaps happen only where both athletes and the matchmaker agree the bout makes sense.
- What is the match format?
- Two rounds of 6:00, submission only. If nobody has finished it, one overtime of 6:00 decided by the first takedown.
- What happens if there is no submission in round one?
- The bout continues into round two. There is no judging and no score, so nothing is decided at the end of a round except that the next one starts.
- What happens if there is no submission in round two?
- Regulation is over and the bout goes to overtime. Again, there is no decision and no scorecard.
- How does overtime work?
- One period of 6:00. The first takedown wins the match. UGI has not published a tie-break for an overtime that ends without one, so ask the promotion if you want to know how that would be handled.
- What photo do I need?
- One clear photograph of you. It is used for your match graphics and the card. JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 25 MB, at least 1200px on the long edge. An iPhone photo works through the normal Photos picker. HEIC files straight off the camera are not readable, and the upload tells you how to fix that.
- Can youth compete?
- Yes. Youth athletes are matched on age as well as weight and experience, and a guardian completes the entry consents.
- What if I am not matched?
- Registering puts you in the pool. It does not guarantee a bout, and if no suitable opponent is found for you, your entry is refunded.
- When are matchups announced?
- Matchups are announced once matchmaking is done and the card is finalised, bout by bout as they are confirmed rather than all at once. There is no fixed announcement date.
